Name the Dragon
I feel a particular love of this topic mainly because I have always loved the idea that people wandered the earth wearing metal and carrying swords. The very idea of a sword has always been of particular fascination to me. A giant blade used to attack, defend and ward off the ill intended.
This fashion has changed with the technological advancement of the musket, the Remington rifle and the finally the concealed carry pistol. We have also stopped wearing metal all over, save for a belt buckle, ring or watch.
What brave people have not stopped doing was finding dragons and slaying them.
Now, I imagine you are thinking there are not enormous fire-breathing flying lizards in the mountain caves above my town. Correct. There are no fire-breathing flyers, we are not crazy people.
There are however, dragons that roam through the halls of our offices, dragons that live in the rafters of our homes, and dragons that live in the hidden secret places of our lives that we don’t talk about and hope that no one notices.
In traditional literature, there is always a plot sequence where the hero learns the name of the dragon before he can kill it.
The hero must name the dragon before it can be attacked.
We have to identify the hidden secret culture/revenue/time/efficiency dragons in our businesses and call them by name before we can end their fiery reign in our lives.
The dragon analogy may resonate with you because you see that there are threats that need addressing, problems that need solving; and you desire to bring order where there is chaos.
The first step is learning the dragon’s name.
The second step is bringing a sword to its lair.
